Parenting a Must Read for those devoted to Christian Faith ---Review #gospelparenting & #flyby
Let's face it none of us are perfect parents, most of us strive to be, but it's next to impossible to be. And you know what, that is okay. Why, because we weren't meant to be the perfect parents.
In fact, we set ourselves up for failure because of the expectations we put on ourselves, and worse we tend to put on our kids. It's not our jobs to be trophy parents. Our kids aren't trophies. They are going to be good at things and bad at others, and it's all okay!
Parenting by Paul David Tripp could not have come into my life at a better time. God certainly does work in mysterious ways. He knows when to give us what we need in life for ourselves and for our kids.
This books takes us through the journey of parenting and teaches us the difference between owning our children and being ambassadors for our children. Owning children sets us all up for disaster and frustration. Tripp takes us through parenting through "14 Gospel Principles that Can Radically Change Your Family".
To be honest, I thought this book was going to do nothing but preach, and make me feel ashamed in some of the feelings I get as a parent. It does the complete opposite. Instead this book points to the common misconceptions of what our roles are as a parent, and teaches or reminds some that our parenting is through God. This book helps to spiritually guide us through parent hood, shows what it truly means to be a parent and to let go of the guilt of the false expectations so many of us put on ourselves when it comes to our children.
Tripp has done a wonderful job of pointing out what we are unable to do because we weren't meant to be able to do it, only God is. He teaches us that God has and continues to provide what we need to be great ambassadors to our children. Let go of materialistic expectations and live.
The Fourteen Gospels of this book: Calling, Grace, Law, Inability, Identity, Process, Lost, Authority, Foolishness, Character, False Gods, Control, Rest, and Mercy. Each gospel teaching has it's own chapter, and stories and examples that anyone can relate to no matter what your socioeconomic status. We can all relate as parents! I know I always think that I am the only one who goes through certain situations with my girls, and it's feels good to know I am not alone!
He reminds us that God does not make us parents if we can't handle what he has given to us. We need to guide our children to Jesus each and every day, and admit and remember that although we are parents we are also children of God.
I can go on and on about this book and what a wake up call it is for me. I am a single mom of 4 girls and they range in ages from teenager down to toddler. I often feel like I am put to the test on a daily basis, and feel inadequate at times. This book for myself is teaching me to have more patience and let go of the ownership and be more of an ambassador. As I had mentioned previously, God certainly does give us what we need when we need it! We have to trust in Him to guide us through parenting as we are his helpers for His children.
I am truly thrilled I have the opportunity to review this book, as God works in mysterious ways and this was given to me at the perfect timing in my life with me and my girls. And now I would love for one of you reading this to have that same opportunity!
